After reaching our “end destination” we are now heading home, whatever this means 😅. The plan is to be in Grenoble area in late September, this gives us 40 days to do 4500 Km, so the journey will be long again 🎉.
This weekend we already moved 980Km south, so 3400Km to go!
🌛About Northern Lights
See the northern lights is something sitting on my bucket list for a long time, and it will still be there for a little while. 🤷🏻♂️
Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by the solar wind.
With that in mind is clear that the phenomenon is always happening, but it is not even visible. The requirements to see that are:
- Proper solar activity
- Clean sky and dark sky
To be able to see the Northern Lights is a combination of 2 elements that we have no control over, but we can increase the odds.
Proper solar activity: For the first requirement, nothing to do other than monitoring. There are some apps that will provide a forecast on the solar activity and the regions where the event is happening.
Clean sky and dark sky: For this requirement, there are a few considerations:
- In Norway, the Northern Lights is a business, so there are people that will sell you the opportunity to see it. They are experienced people that will help you plan your trip and also take you to the best spot. Not sure how much this service will cost.
- It requires a dark sky to see it and as we know, in northern Norway in the summer there are more than 20 hours of sunlight. It won’t be completely dark even when the sun is down — Also, the weather is quite unstable during the summer and this can make it even harder.
Long story short, summer is not good — we are in the summer, so not good.
Tromsø and Northern Lights
Yep, anyway, we’d like to know Tromsø which is known to be one of the best places to see the Northern lights. The place is beautiful and we had a great time there.
There is a huge area to park the motorhome with a splendid view of the sea and the bay area. We spent one week there and the expected happened ….. nothing 🙃, we already said it is not good. So no Northern lights for us, I guess we have an excuse to come back in a different season.
😴 Time to rest a bit
We took the weekend to rest a bit, clean the house and organize our things, so no big travels during the weekend.
Now from next week on, we resume the descent with full power and we must reach Bergen no late than Sept 3rd 🛫
